7/1/05  The North Carolina State Bar has launched a website dedicated to NC Certified Paralegals.  It is located at http://www.nccertifiedparalegal.org  Applications are available on-line and are currently being accepted by the State Bar.

10/22/04  The North Carolina State Bar Council appointed the initial Board of Paralegal Certification.  The Board members are:

1) Grace Carter of Nelson, Mullins, Riley & Scarborough in Raleigh.
2) Tammy Moldovan of Bentley Law Offices, P.A. in Durham.
3) Sharon Robertson of NC Prisoner Legal Services in  Linville Falls.
4) Sherri Wall of Highwoods Properties in Raleigh.
5) Mike Booe of Kennedy Covington Lobdell & Hickman in Charlotte.
6) Renny Deese of Reid Lewis Deese Nance & Person, LLP in Fayetteville.
7) John Harris of The Harris Law Firm, Morehead City.
8) Barry Mann of Manning, Fulton & Skinner, PA in Raleigh.
9) Marisa Campbell, the director of the paralegal program at Meredith
College in Raleigh.

Board members serve three year terms but in order to stagger the terms the initial terms for these Board members will range from one to three years.  Mr. Mike Booe was appointed Chair of the Board.

10/11/04  The North Carolina Supreme Court approved the Plan for Certification of Paralegals during its administrative session last week.  The NC State Bar plans to appoint the initial Paralegal Certification Board during its Council meeting on October 22, 2004.

The Plan for Certification of Paralegals has been forwarded to the NC Supreme Court for approval for inclusion in the NC Administrative Code.  Assuming approval by the Supreme Court, the NC State Bar plans to appoint the initial Board during October, 2004.

On 08/02/04 North Carolina Governor Mike Easley signed HB356 making it Session Law 2004-174.  The Plan for Certification of Paralegals will be forwarded shortly to the NC Supreme Court for approval for inclusion in the NC Administrative Code.

On 07/16/04 the Council of the NC State Bar voted unanimously to approve the Plan for Certification of Paralegals contingent on HB356 being signed by the Governor.  It will then be forwarded to the NC Supreme Court for approval.

On 07/16/04 House Bill 356 became ratified after passing its 3rd reading in the House on 7/15/04.  It will become law once it is signed by the Governor.  The status of HB356 can be viewed here.  The text of HB356 can be viewed here.  The law becomes effective on October 1, 2004.
